BRENT BURNS NAMED ENTERTAINER OF
THE YEAR
Legendary Gulf Coast singer,
songwriter and humorist, Brent Burns won three
awards at the first ever Trop Rock Music Awards
held in Key West, FL on Friday, October 31,
2008.
Burns won awards for entertainer of the year, CD
of the year for his “Ragtops and Flip Flops” and
a special WAVE Award for his charitable work
through his Brent Burns Charitable Foundation.
The awards were presented by the Margarita
MAFIA, an organization of musicians, fans and
artists in alliance to promote Trop Rock music.
“Trop Rock” music has been around for years, but
the term “Trop Rock” is just now catching on to
describe a genre of music defined as “a mixture
of rock-n-roll and country music with an island
theme and lyrics depicting a laid-back
lifestyle.”

NO CANE, NO PAIN
Brent Burns is a Purple Heart
awarded Vietnam veteran. For years he carried a
constant physical reminder of his service.
Badly wounded, Brent spent the years immediately
following Vietnam in and out of VA hospitals and
clinics. Results of his injury were near
constant pain and one leg considerably shorter
than the other. Brent walked with a bad limp, a
4” built up shoe and a cane. All that changed
August 11, 2005! Brent travelled to the
Dorr Arthritis Institute in Los Angeles, CA
for a total hip replacement. His surgeon was
Dr. William T. Long. Brent’s injury and history
of infection complicated the procedure, but all
is well! He keeps the shoe and cane as a
reminder, but the limp is long gone. Brent is a
whirlwind of activity and has even taken up
golf! To express his thanks to Dr. Long and the
staff of the Dorr Institute, Brent wrote the
song “No Pain, No Cane” and included it on his
award winning CD, “Ragtops and Flip Flops.”
Brent also supports Dr. Long and the Dorr
Institute’s “Operation Walk,” a charitable
endeavor providing joint replacement surgery and
training for local physicians both in the US and
abroad. To learn more about Operation Walk,

BRENT FIRST TO ENTERTAIN AMERICAN
TROOPS OVERSEAS AFTER SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACK
What started out as a trip to Italy for Brent
and his son, Buster, ended up being way more
than a vacation. Brent became the first
entertainer to perform for U.S. troops overseas
since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
“In
July 2001, I had planned an Italian vacation.”
said Brent. “On September 11th, the focus
changed. When I was in Vietnam I truly
appreciated the entertainers who performed for
us and I wanted to do the same for this
generation of Americans. My son-in-law is a
Marine Corps F-18 pilot. So I called my
long-time publicist, Carole Bartholomeaux, and
she pulled a few strings and with the help of
Senators John McCain and John Kyl (R-AZ), and
the Pentagon, the shows were approved.
Commander Voorhees, at the Pentagon, and Joe
Mennit in Italy, were extremely helpful in
putting the performances together quickly.”
On
November 5th, 2001, Brent performed songs from
his two CDs, “Livin’ the Life (Jimmy Buffett
Only Wrote About),” and “Perpetual Vacation,” to
an enthusiastic crowd of officers and enlisted
families stationed at Aviano Air Base in Italy.
Burns also visited patients at the local
military hospital, and later strummed a few
tunes for the children at the local school.
After his performances, Brent and Buster did the
“tourist thing” and visited Rome, Florence and
Venice.
